A slow, stately court dance in double time, of Paduan origin, especially popular in Italy and France in the 16th and 17th centuries. Music composed for or derived from the pavane is often coupled with that composed for a galliard. Composers of the pavane include John Dowland and Willliam Byrd, and more recently Maurice Ravel, whose Pavane pour une infante défunte/Pavane for a Dead Infanta for piano (1899) was orchestrated in 1905.
