Peale (lived 18th–19th centuries)

Name of an American artist family, most notable of whom was Charles Willson (1741–1826). He studied under Benjamin West in London, 1767–70, and worked successfully as a portrait painter in Philadelphia. He painted several portraits of George Washington and of other famous men of his time (Independence Hall, Philadelphia). His brother James (1749–1831), whom he taught, was a miniaturist, and his sons (whom he named after old masters) were also painters; Rembrandt (1778–1860) was a portraitist and lithographer, Raphaelle (1774–1825) a still-life painter, and Titian Ramsey (1800–1885) an animal draughtsperson. Sarah (1800–1885), James's daughter, painted portraits and still lifes.
