Pekin

River port and seat of Tazewell County, central Illinois, USA, on the Illinois River, 16 km/10 mi south of Peoria; population (1990) 32,300. It is river and rail distribution point for the region's grain, cattle, and coal. Local manufactures include corn products, alcohol and liquors, steel tanks, barrels, burial vaults, and metal castings. Pekin was settled in 1824. It is the birthplace of US senator Everett M Dirksen, and the site of the Dirksen Congressional Leadership Research Library. The Powerton Fish and Wildlife Area lies 6 km/4 mi to the southwest.
