pelota

Very fast ball game of Basque derivation, popular in Latin American countries and in the US where it is a betting sport. It is played by two, four, or six players, in a walled court, or cancha, and somewhat resembles squash, but each player uses a long, curved, wickerwork basket, or cesta, strapped to the hand, to hurl the ball, or pelota (about the size of a baseball), against the walls.
