pemmican

Preparation of dried lean beef or venison pounded into a paste with fat and dried berries and preserved as pressed cakes. Pemmican (made with bison meat) was used as a food by some North American Indians. Similar preparations, using beef, were used for high-energy rations by early Arctic explorers.
