penny post

First prepaid postal service, introduced in Britain in 1840. Until then, postage was paid by the recipient according to the distance travelled. Rowland Hill of Shrewsbury suggested a new service which would be paid for by the sender of the letter or package according to its weight. The Penny Black stamp was introduced in May 1840, and bore the sovereign's portrait in the manner of coins.
