Figure of five straight lines forming a five-pointed star. It is found frequently in early ornamental art, and has been used as a mystic symbol in the West since the ancient Greeks.

The pentagram was used by the followers of the Greek mathematician Pythagoras and by astrologers and necromancers in the Middle Ages. Together with the sign of the cross, it came to be used on doorways and thresholds as a charm to keep away witches and evil spirits, and it still continues to be employed by occult societies. The pentagram should be formed without a break in the drawing.
