peony

Any of a group of perennial plants native to Europe, Asia, and North America, remarkable for their large, round, brilliant white, pink, or red flowers. Most popular in gardens are the common peony (P. officinalis), the white peony (P. lactiflora), and the taller tree peony (P. suffruticosa). (Genus Paeonia, family Paeoniaceae.)
