performance practice

The study of how music was performed in the age in which it was written. A discipline associated with the authenticity movement, it was first applied to music written in the baroque period and earlier, and subsequently also to that of the classical period. Recent academic interest in early recordings of the 20th century has led to the expansion of performance practice to embrace music of any period before the present day.
