osteosarcoma

Malignant bone cancer. It most commonly occurs first in long bones, though secondary tumours may develop elsewhere, particularly in the lungs. At one time amputation was considered essential but today the limb may be saved by replacing the diseased bone with a metal prosthesis; chemotherapy is also used. It is the most common type of malignant bone cancer and the sixth leading cancer in pre-adolescent children.
