phreaking

In computing, using computer technology to make free long-distance phone calls, charge them to another account, or otherwise illegally access the telephone network. In the 1980s, phreaking was semi-respectable among hackers (see hacking), but it is now less reputable – and thanks to improved security in the phone network, much more difficult. The case of Kevin Mitnick did much to bring phreaking to public attention.
