anhydride
Chemical compound obtained by the removal of water from another compound; usually a dehydrated acid. For example, sulphur(VI) oxide (sulphur trioxide, SO3) is the anhydride of sulphuric acid (H2SO4).
For monobasic acids, such as carboxylic acids, the formation of an anhydride involves the loss of a molecule of water from two molecules of acid or from two carboxylic groups within one molecule, the latter resulting in a ring closure.
