phyllotaxis

Arrangement of leaves on a plant stem. Leaves are nearly always arranged in a regular pattern and in the majority of plants they are inserted singly, either in a spiral arrangement up the stem, or on alternate sides. Other principal forms are opposite leaves, where two arise from the same node, and whorled, where three or more arise from the same node.
