piano-organ

    0.14 sec.

piano-organ

Mechanical instrument similar to the barrel organ in the shape of an upright piano, producing its notes in the same way by a studded cylinder, but from strings struck by hammers instead of pipes.

It was widely used by street musicians in the larger English cities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in London. It was often wrongly called the ‘barrel organ’ and even more incorrectly the ‘hurdy-gurdy’.
