Picayune

Town in Pearl River County, southern Mississippi, USA, 6 km/4 mi east of the Pearl River and the Louisiana border, 56 km/35 mi northwest of Gulfport; population (1990) 10,600. It is a trading hub for local lumber, livestock, and dairy producers. Tung oil (used in paints and varnishes) is prominent among its manufactures, which also include heavy goods vehicle parts and textiles. NASA's John C Stennis Space Centre, a 13,500-ac/5,460-ha installation for space, oceanographic, and environmental research, lies 21 km/13 mi to the south.

Picayune was settled in 1885, and named after a New Orleans newspaper.
