pietà

A depiction of the Virgin Mary mourning over the body of Christ. Examples include the Avignon Pietà (c. 1455; Louvre, Paris), Michelangelo's carved Pietà (1498–99; St Peter's, Rome), and Giovanni Bellini's Pietà (1468–71; Brera Gallery, Milan).
