pimpernel

Any of a group of plants belonging to the primrose family, comprising about 30 species mostly native to Western Europe. The European scarlet pimpernel (A. arvensis) grows in cornfields, the small star-shaped flowers opening only in full sunshine. It is naturalized in North America. (Genus Anagallis, family Primulaceae.)
