pink

Any of a group of annual or perennial plants that have stems with characteristic swellings (nodes) and scented flowers ranging in colour from white through pink to purple. Members of the pink family include carnations, sweet williams, and baby's breath (Gypsophila paniculata). (Genus Dianthus, family Carophyllaceae.)

Deptford pink (D. armeria), which has deep pink flowers with pale dots, is native to Europe and naturalized in the USA.

Pink (1979– )

US pop singer and songwriter. Her pink-haired sassy punk image and R&B-inspired music are edgier than those of other teen idols such as Britney Spears. She achieved her first major hit with ‘There You Go’ (2000). Her single ‘Trouble’ (2003) won the 2004 Grammy award for best female vocal performance.

Her first album, Can't Take Me Home (2000), featured the hit single ‘Most Girls’. The edgier multi-platinum M!ssundaztood (2001), featuring the hit singles ‘Get the Party Started’ and ‘Just Like a Pill’, was largely written and produced by Linda Perry, former lead singer of the 1990s rock group 4 Non Blondes. Try This (2003), a collaboration with members of the anti-establishment rock group Rancid, also went platinum. Her collaboration for the remake of ‘Lady Marmalade’ (2001) for the film Moulin Rouge was a multi-award-winning hit. For her hit single ‘Feel Good Time’ (2003), for the film Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, she teamed up with influential English producer William Orbit.

Pink was born in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, a small town outside Philadelphia. She sang backup with a local rap group at the age of 13 and gained the attention of MCA Records, who recruited her for the R&B vocal group Basic Instinct, after singing at the club of a DJ friend. She moved to another R&B group, Choice, where she was picked up by LaFace Records, co-founded by writer/producer Babyface (Kenneth Edmonds), and signed on as a solo artist.
