Arapaima
| Genus of primitive teleost fishes belonging to the order Osteoglossiformes, related to the salmon and herring. A. gigas is the largest freshwater fish in the world, attaining 4.5 m/15 ft in length, and weighing 200 kg/440 lb. In South America it is captured by spearing for exportation. |
