pitta

Tropical bird of order Passeriformes, genus Pitta, forming the family Pittidae. Some 20 species are native to Southeast Asia, West Africa, and Australia. They have round bodies, big heads, are often brightly coloured, and are silent. They live on the ground and in low undergrowth, and can run from danger. They feed on insects.

A new species of antpitta was discovered in southern Ecuador in 1998. It measures 20 cm/7.9 in in length which means it is the largest bird to be discovered in the last 50 years.
