tartan
Woollen cloth woven in specific chequered patterns individual to Scottish clans, with stripes of different widths and colours crisscrossing on a coloured background; it is used in making skirts, kilts, trousers, and other articles of clothing.
Developed in the 17th century, tartan was banned after the 1745 Jacobite rebellion, and not legalized again until 1782.
