knotgrass

Annual plant belonging to the dock family. The bases of the small lance-shaped leaves enclose the slender stems, giving a superficial resemblance to grass. Small pinkish flowers are followed by seeds that are eaten by birds. Knotgrass grows worldwide except in the polar regions. (Polygonum aviculare, family Polygonaceae.)

The creeping grass (Paspalum distichum) of North America is sometimes also called knotgrass.
