Opera by Antonio Cesti (libretto by F Sbarra), produced in 1667 at the Carnival, in Vienna, for the wedding of the Emperor Leopold I and the Infanta Margherita of Spain. It was reputed to be the most expensive opera production ever mounted. In the story, Discord throws a golden apple, inscribed ‘to the most beautiful’, to Juno, Athena, and Venus. Paris judges Venus the most beautiful after she offers him Helen. There is disarray amongst the goddesses until Jupiter puts and end to the bickering.
