There are over 400 species of pansy, or violet, widely distributed in temperate regions. The flowers have five unequally shaped petals.

Cultivated plant derived from the European wild pansy (Viola tricolor) and including many different varieties and strains. The flowers are usually purple, yellow, or cream, or a mixture of these colours, and there are many highly developed varieties bred for size, colour, or special markings. Several of the 400 different species are scented. (Family Violaceae.)
