pop festival

Outdoor musical event usually spanning a weekend and featuring a number of bands; pop, rock, heavy-metal, and world-music festivals have become regular events in many countries since the 1960s. Perhaps the most publicized was Woodstock, which took place in 1969 in Bethel, New York, and featured performances by The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and the Grateful Dead.

Other notable events in the sixties included the Monterey International Pop Festival (1967) and the Isle of Wight Festival (1970).

Pop festivals in the USA include Lollapalooza, a travelling summer festival which focuses on rock and rap music. The festival was established in 1991 and was inspired by festivals in the UK.

The future of festivals is threatened by local disputes over noise levels, crime, and drug use. Woodstock 1999, in Rome, New York, was marred by violence and looting, as what began as a protest against overpriced food ended in festival-goers setting fire to cars and destroying sound and lighting equipment. In 1999 the festival-going community was shocked by the rape of a woman at Reading festival.
