Population pyramids are a useful way of summarizing population development and can be used to predict future changes. The ‘pyramid’ shape with a wide base narrowing upwards is typical of less economically developed countries (LEDCs). The more rectangular, pillar-shaped ‘pyramid’ is typical of more economically developed countries (MEDCs).

Graph of the population of an area, such as a country or town, using age and sex groupings. The pyramid is arranged with the youngest age group at the bottom and the eldest at the top, at intervals of five to ten years. The pyramid is split down the middle, with one side showing male groups and the other side female groups. Population pyramids are a useful way of summarizing the demographic characteristics of an area. Their shape reflects changes in birth rate and death rate.
