DownHistoric county of southeastern Northern Ireland; area 2,448 sq km/945 sq mi. The principal towns and cities are Downpatrick, Bangor, Newtownards, Newry, and Banbridge. The northern part of the county lies within the commuter belt for Belfast, and includes part of the city of Belfast, east of the River Lagan. Down is a largely lowland county, although the south is dominated by the Mourne Mountains, the highest point of which is Slieve Donard (852 m/2,796 ft), the highest point in Northern Ireland. Administrative responsibility for the county is held by the councils of Down, Castlereagh, North Down, Banbridge, Ards, and Newry and Mourne.
