gearing

Relationship between company funding that bears a fixed interest charge, such as debentures, and preference shares to its equity or ordinary share capital. When the proportion of long-term fixed interest capital is greater, the company is said to be highly geared. Highly geared companies are considered speculative investments for ordinary shareholders as the fixed interest is paid before funds become available for other purposes such as paying a dividend.
