gearingRelationship between a company's funding that bears a fixed-interest charge, such as debentures, and preference shares to its equity or ordinary share capital. When the proportion of long-term fixed-interest capital is greater, the company is said to be highly geared. Highly-geared companies are considered speculative investments for ordinary shareholders as the fixed interest is paid before funds become available for other purposes such as paying a dividend.
