One of two species of North American bird, family Tetraonidae, order Galliformes: the lesser prairie chicken Tympanuchus americanus and the grater prairie chicken Tetrao cupido.

The propellers of wind turbines, some more than 100 feet in diameter, and reaching high speeds in high winds, pose threats of more than one kind: Few of the lumbering birds might fly high enough to be struck by the generator blades, but scientists are finding that sage grouse, prairie chickens and related birds fear tall structures where hawks, eagles and other predators might roost.
Strawberries will attract catbirds, prairie chickens, crows, grouse, quails, robins, and sparrows while raspberries will attract bobwhites, bluebirds, buntings, chickadees, orioles, band-tailed pigeons, titmice, and waxwings.
Other native birds prefer completely undisturbed habitats; and still others, such as prairie chickens, require a mix of habitats.
