pasqueflower

Plant Anemone patens of the buttercup family, native to the central USA. It has a hairy stalk and hairy leaves near the base. The showy lavender-blue flowers are 2 in/5 cm across.

It displays small, pink springtime flowers, which are beautiful, but the real showstopper to Prairie Smoke is when the blooms begin to set their seeds.
This summer, marigolds bloomed among the Three Sisters (corn, beans and squash), and you could find prairie smoke, slender vervain, chives and wild columbine, which is native to the Don River watershed.
Prairie smoke, prairie buttercups, prairie violets, all low-growing plants, soon follow.
