sermon

In Christianity and Buddhism, spoken or written discourse on a religious subject. The Sermon on the Mount is the summary of Jesus' teachings recorded in Matthew 5:7; this formed the core of subsequent Christian teaching on discipleship. In many churches the sermon is preached from the pulpit, and is based on current issues or passages of the Bible.

The Buddha's first sermon was preached in a deer park soon after he had reached enlightenment. In it he described the Middle Way, which avoids extremes of asceticism and pleasure-seeking.
