prematurity

Condition of an infant born before the full term. In obstetrics, an infant born before 37 weeks' gestation is described as premature.

Premature babies are often at risk. They lose heat quickly because they lack an insulating layer of fat beneath the skin; there may also be breathing difficulties. In hospitals with advanced technology, specialized neonatal units can save some babies born as early as 23 weeks.
