premedication

Combination of drugs given before surgery to prepare a patient for general anaesthesia.

One component (an anticholinergic) dries excess secretions produced by the airways when a tube is passed down the trachea, and during inhalation of anaesthetic gases. Other substances act to relax muscles, reduce anxiety, and relieve pain.
