Absence of political censorship in the press or other media, a concept seen as basic to Western democracy. Access to and expression of views are, however, in practice restricted by the commercial and financial interests of the owners and advertisers.

1999 data showed a decline in American public support for the freedom of the press. 53% surveyed Americans believe the US press has too much freedom. In 1997, the figure was 38%.
