spikeletIn botany, one of the units of a grass inflorescence. It comprises a slender axis on which one or more flowers are borne. Each individual flower or floret has a pair of scalelike bracts, the glumes, and is enclosed by a membranous lemma and a thin, narrow palea, which may be extended into a long, slender bristle, or awn.
