Primavera

Tempera painting on panel by Sandro Botticelli (1478; Uffizi Gallery, Florence). It shows Venus in a grove attended by two groups of pagan deities, one symbolizing earthly love, the other, divine love. With this Platonic theme of lower and higher love, it is the first major painting of Christian Europe to depict classical myth and philosophy. A highly symbolic work, it defies all attempts at complete interpretation.
