primary sexual characteristic

Endocrine gland producing maleness and femaleness. In males, the primary sexual characteristic is the testis; in females it is the ovary. Both are endocrine glands that produce hormones responsible for secondary sexual characteristics, such as facial hair and a deep voice in males, and breasts in females.
