private enterprise

Sector of the economy or business unit where economic activities are in private hands, set up through private capital and carried out for private profit, as opposed to national, municipal, or cooperative ownership.

Private enterprise is distinguished from public spending, although public funds are often funnelled into private enterprises, as with defence contractors or infrastructure development (public works contractors).
