privet

Any of a group of evergreen shrubs with dark green leaves, belonging to the olive family. They include the European common privet (L. vulgare) with white flowers and black berries, naturalized in North America, and the native North American California privet (L. ovalifolium), also known as hedge privet. (Genus Ligustrum, family Oleaceae.)
