proboscis monkey

Large, leaf-eating monkey found only in mangrove swamps in Borneo. The male's nose is bulbous and prolonged to hang below the upper lip. On average, males weigh around 20 kg/44 lb and females around 10 kg/22 lb. They live in groups of between 9 and 20 animals, with one mature male, the rest being females and juveniles. They eat leaves, fruits, and seeds.

Classification Proboscis monkeys Nasalis larvatus, are in family Cercopithecidae, order Primates.

In 2002, there were only about 1,000 proboscis monkeys remaining, representing a decline from 6,000 in 1972. They are classified as endangered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
