Novocaine

Trade name of procaine, the first synthetic local anaesthetic, invented in 1905. It is now seldom used, having been replaced by agents such as lignocaine. It is as effective as cocaine, formerly used as a painkiller, when injected, but only one third as toxic and not habit-forming.
