profit-sharing

System whereby an employer pays workers a share of the company's profits, which is often a percentage based on annual salary and invested by the employer in a retirement plan operated or overseen by the employer. It may be paid as cash or shares of stock in the firm. It originated in France in the early 19th century and was widely practised for a time within the cooperative movement.
