progestogen

In medicine, drug closely related to progesterone, a female sex hormone that stimulates growth and secretion of the endometrial glands of the uterus in the first half of the menstrual cycle. Oral contraceptives contain progestogens, either alone or in combination with oestrogens.

The contraceptive action of progestogens is due to their disruption of the menstrual cycle by their effect on the pituitary gland and because they make fertilization of an ovum less likely because of their effects on uterine tissue.
