proof spirit

Numerical scale used to indicate the alcohol content of an alcoholic drink. Proof spirit (or 100% proof spirit) acquired its name from a solution of alcohol in water which, when used to moisten gunpowder, contained just enough alcohol to permit it to burn.

In practice the proof scale is related to the alcohol content by a factor of two. Whisky containing 40% alcohol, by volume, is 80 degrees proof. The UK uses a different scale; the same whisky would be 70 degrees proof on the UK scale.
