propellantSubstance burned in a rocket for propulsion. With bipropellant, two propellants are used: oxidizer and fuel are stored in separate tanks and pumped independently into the combustion chamber. Liquid oxygen (oxidizer) and liquid hydrogen (fuel) are common propellants, used, for example, in the space shuttle main engines. The explosive charge that propels a projectile from a gun is also called a propellant. |
