proteome

Full complement of proteins that sustain cell functions within the body. The human proteome consists of millions of proteins and its makeup varies depending on the stage of cell development.

In February 2001, the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO), an international alliance of academic institutes and companies, was formed to map the function of every human protein. In April, a US-Japanese consortium announced a separate US$185 million plan, which plans to complete the task within three years.
