protistSingle-celled organism which has a eukaryotic cell, but which is not a member of the plant, fungal, or animal kingdoms. The main protists are protozoa. Single-celled photosynthetic organisms, such as diatoms and dinoflagellates, are classified as protists or algae. Recently the term has also been used for members of the kingdom Protista, which features in certain five-kingdom classifications of the living world (see also plant classification). This kingdom may include slime moulds, all algae (seaweeds as well as unicellular forms), and protozoa. How to thank TFD for its existence? While some scientists once thought that each little jar-like structure of Cambrothyra was the shell of a tiny single-celled protist, our work instead supports the hypothesis that Cambrothyra was an animal, probably a few centimeters long, that was covered with an armor that was made up of hundreds of separate tiny, jar-shaped pieces," said Moore. The text discusses the decay process and human remains, including body fluids and waste products, DNA, hair, teeth, bones, and wounds, and the range of organisms used in forensic investigations--invertebrates, vertebrates, protists, fungi, plants and microbes.
