crotchet

In music, a note value one-quarter the duration of a semibreve. It is written as a filled black note-head with a stem. It is the basic unit of beat for the most frequently used time signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, and so on).

In the UK, it is known as a crotchet.

Several of the pieces do include dotted quarter notes followed by eighth notes, so a student would need knowledge of counting these types of rhythms before beginning this work.
The slip jig is in 9/8 time, traditionally with accents on 5 beats - two pairs of quarter-note/eighth-note followed by a dotted quarter note.
That means there's three beats in each measure and each beat is the same as a quarter note.
