query

In computing, a question asked of a database. Queries form the bulk of programmed processes and are run as an intermediate stage between data input and the output report. A query needs to be set up and executed in order to generate information that will then be passed to the report generator.

Queries are often set up by the database designer and run without user intervention. Data mining is a powerful query technique used to establish patterns in vast quantities of apparently unrelated data.
