quo warranto

In England, writ issued by the Court of the King's Bench from mid-13th century demanding proof of liberty holders rights to enjoy such privileges. The measure was first used by Edward I to challenge the power of the Marcher Lords. A modification in 1290 allowed long established use of such privileges as proof of right to hold them in addition to the established defence of a royal grant. The measure was revived by Charles II after the Restoration to investigate corporations and James II used it to remodel borough charters.
